We at the NCC strongly believe that public involvement and open dialogue with the public are key determining factors in the success of our projects, plans and programs.
Opportunities to meet and exchange with the public are taken very seriously and public comments are extremely valuable. We strongly believe that the public has a wealth of knowledge and expertise that can enhance our work.
Public participation takes various forms at the NCC:
- Public Consultations are opportunities for the public to share their ideas on various projects. On a yearly basis, some ten topics become the subject of public consultations.
- Annual General Meeting, taking place once a year in the fall and coinciding with the release of our Annual Report. The general public is invited to an evening of information and idea sharing with the NCC's board of directors.
- Meeting with Interest Groups and the Public, taking place once a year in the spring. This is a great opportunity for groups and the public to present their ideas to the NCC's board of directors in order to support the NCC in achieving its mandate.
Openness and Transparency
Building on the 2006 Mandate Review recommendations and in the context of the renewed leadership within the Board of Directors, the NCC recently announced the implementation of various mechanisms that will contribute to a more open and transparent organization.
Key initiatives include:
- the opening of regular board meetings to the public;
- the establishment of public standing committees;
- the creation of an external ombudsman function; and
- the introduction of an annual open house.
Greater access to corporate information, new open-door opportunities with the CEO and renewed efforts to establish an on-going dialogue with the mayors of the Capital region were also announced. These initiatives are to be added to current public participation practices.
