National Capital Commission
Canada

The National Capital Commission is pleased that on June 9, 2009 the Government of Canada introduced a Bill in Parliament that once approved will acknowledge the National Capital Commission as an important federal institution and will modernize the powers and authorities of the NCC.

Since the Mandate Review Report was tabled (December 20, 2006), the NCC has worked diligently to implement many of the recommendations made by the Panel to improve its openness and transparency and to engage its partners and stakeholders in the delivery of its mandate.

The functions of the CEO and Chair of the NCC Board have been separated and beginning in November 2007, the NCC opened its Board meetings to the public. In September 2008, an Ombudsman was appointed as a measure of last recourse for complaints by the public.

The NCC has renewed its dialogue its federal and provincial partners, its stakeholders and the public as well as the mayors for the cities of Ottawa, Gatineau and those of the National Capital Region.

Once Royal Assent on the changes to the National Capital Act is received, the NCC will work to implement these changes and fulfill its mandate of creating a Capital for all Canadians.
